Radioactive Hyena† 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2010 Heard this on the news when I woke up and figured I'd warn everyone here. Hackers are sending out a mail saying your password has been changed, in it is a link, DONT CLICK IT. If you do they get every password on your computer, even banking passwords. Heres a link to a news place about it: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE62G5A420100318

Flechmen 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 This kinda stuff is actually pretty typical. Not sure why its such a big deal... There are good ways to prevent your stuff from being stolen. Companies like PayPal, Ebay, the like will never send you a message with some warning (there's something wrong with your account, etc) and a link that says "click here to fix this problem". If you ever get something like this, its almost guaranteed to be a scam. If you do get an email like this, do not click on any links from the email. Instead, go directly to the website and make sure everything is ok. The other thing to watch out for, is phishing websites. Phishing (pronounced like "fishing") is the act of stealing account information by having the user log in to a fake site. It's pretty easy to tell a fake site if you know where to look. For any website, before you log in, check the URL (at the top). Does it say what it should say? For example, the url for this website is http://christianfurs.net/ If you see ANYTHING else for the first part of the address, its fake. Even if there's another period after the .net (it can be that subtle). It will always be a forward slash. This is true for any website. For facebook, ebay, anything. For secure sites like PayPal, your browser will tell you its secure. If you haven't switched already, you should change to a secure browser like Firefox that will give a very noticeable indication that a site is secure. A bright green bar. Look at the PayPal URL, make sure it looks exactly like this: https://www.paypal.com/ Notice the https:// at the beginning. The additional s means its secured. So, just some general tips. DECTS† 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2010 Best way to avoid stuff like this, check your information first on the website, such as facebook, and if you can log in fine, then you know it's fake.
