Judges please!

Allo again furred brothers and not so furred, I continue to work on solo cover instrumentals, although feeling like I'm rushing myself to do as many as I can (I don't know why!), it would be good to have feedback on my rough takes! Like maybe my mixing could be better or my sounds or such!

I've just finished a rough playthrough of Coldplays Violet Hill, excluding the piano outro and acoustic guitar... (My piano skills aren't what they could be, and all I really have for recording my acoustic is a camera), so, doth tell what yall think so far!

Also been thinking... Anyone interested in trying out creating a virtual band for fun? Would be an interesting change - especially to find a singer for once...

Your playthrough sounds pretty decent in comparison to the original. Good thing I own that album! There isn't really any area that jumps out at me as needing particular attention besides the fact that it lacks the end of the song. :P

And what do you mean by creating a virtual band? How exactly would you go about doing so? Because I'm interested, but currently I'm in Korea...

They bass guitar is extremely overpowering the entire mix. It's all I hear. You need to tighten up the lower end of the mix, for its really washing out everything else. The hi-hat is very mechanical sounding. The guitars are pretty good. The piano is also lost in the mix, if you are trying to highlight that part.

What XarZyth said. Enough that it makes me think the speakers you're using have no low end or are set so that the bass guitar just isn't coming through for you like it is for us.

Piano is flat and a bit thin, but that's micing and the microphones you're using. I used three really high end microphones when I was doing that sort of thing back in the day. Two in the lid over the hammers, and an area mic at the back of the piano. This assumes that's a live piano and of the grand type, and that you have three really good mics and a pair of boom stands.

The electric guitar sounds like you were too conservative in the playing, well, the whole song does. Like you were striving for technical proficiency rather than just playing the song for an audience. There's a clipped sort of quality to it that stems from that - part of XarZyth's mechanical sounding comment I think. You may have also compressed the electric guitar a hair much. It makes the electric guitar and drums sound a bit at odds with each other, mostly along the high end, as the drums have a more natural sounding frequency and volume range to them where the electric doesn't.

But ignoring the overpowering bass guitar, it's a rather enjoyable listen. Keep it up.

Ha a whole lot more of a technical response than I was expecting, but good feedback. I'll have to tone down the bass then, as for the rest my setup is fairly basic unfortunately! The piano is actually just a Roland Synthasizer connected to a laptop by USB and MIDI. Hmmm I still have a long way to go with my technical mind in music, I just started in music a little bit around 3 years ago and have only ever played for a church band so far, so considering the low budget (more like no budget! lol) and only a few years experience so far, it's fairly positive feedback so far! Thanks.

As for the virtual band, a little idea I got from seeing a 'virtual band' on youtube once, as of where all the bands members live in different locations, so instead of playing live together, they would record seperately and put their work together on the net into songs. It's an interesting concept that's on my mind... Considering I haven't been able to find an actual band to play with! (Or well... I've haven't really known how to look for one lol)

Currently I only have my Irish whistle with me (my bodhran, didgeridoo, and other instruments are in the US). Well...I suppose I could also sing, though I'm not really that great of a singer...

The Irish whistle is in the key of D and only has a range of 2 octaves, in case you were wondering. Like I said, I am interested in this virtual band idea.

Oh' date=' I forgot that I also have a triangle here with me.

lol, if I did some metal.... Then you are certainly the one to go to! I can imagine that, a heap of metal heads on stage with someone jamming away on a triangle

Triangles are useful for more than just metal! There was one song I played in high school band where we used giant oxygen tanks with the bottoms cut off at different lengths as bells. And the year before I was in band they had a song that used an anvil.

Plus, a triangle is close to a cowbell...
