Laptop Broken

Right after I get a tablet too... cruel irony.

 

Anyway, the computer boots, but the screen is black and caps lock blinks once a second. I have an HP. Anyway, I read that the blinking and black screen means the CPU needs reseating. What does that mean?

 

If it means having to get a new laptop, I can kiss my tablet goodbye.

was it dropped or something? Ive never had to reseat a cpu before. You might as well find a guide on how to open your model of laptop.

It means your computer has serious issues. In order to properly diagnose the exact cause and offer solutions I will need as much information as you can give. So computer model number, version of windows, processor, graphics card (even if it's integrated), sound card, wireless card, etc. Is the screen black the entire time or can you see something on the screen before it goes black? What happened before the problem started occurring--is there anything that may have caused the computer to break?

 

Also, is the computer still under warranty?

 

I'll do the best I can, but being overseas means I'm sort of like a call center... except crazier and possibly more helpful.

Yeah, if we have a model number it could reveal more. It sounds like a typical dv6000 though.

 

If your research turned up that the GPU needs reseating... that's a bit strange, but it's something the dv6000 and dv9000 series suffered... which usually meant getting a new computer, or trying to gently heat the CPU/GPU with a bit of weight (a few quarters) on top of it. If you have a heat gun, this shouldn't be too hard, I've seen people do it with denatured alcohol and I've tried to do it with a toaster oven. Some people have had success with it... most people aren't comfortable taking their computer apart.

My Pavilion dv6700 did this, my sister's Presario CQ61 does this, and my Toshiba even did this. :-/

 

For my sister's laptop and my Toshiba laptop, I wrap the computer in a heavy blanket (while turned on) for a while, and let the computer overheat itself a bit. After anywhere from 10-45 minutes, I turn it off/on, and it starts right up.

It seems like it wouldn't work, but it does. And several people on the Toshiba forums got it to work, too. ^^

 

So give it a try, and see if it works. :3

If you get another laptop I would recommend something other than HP. My family has a giant stack of dead HP laptops that grows over the years.
