First Fursuit Head: Tomedoe WIP

Recommended Posts

Critique if you like! This is what I have so far of my bushbaby character named Tomedoe! Like Tomato just with a D. And there's emphasis on the tomay.

The head is almost done, as you can see in the concept art, I need bangs still and I need eyes. She annot have toony eyes. That's not what I had for her in the beginning, but even the fantasy streamline eyes I have in the concept art aren't working! I don't know what to do about that! This is gotten hard all of a sudden. Most people would be done with their first head by now! I've seen a few people that started after me and they're done.

I don't know why things work this way when you're close to the end, but I guess they just do, lol.

The nostrils were just done this moring and I'm quite proud of myself. I was so scared to attempt to cut them. I was a doofus and didn't do it before I finished and glued down the fur. >__< I'd like to be spot on like a mirror image to the concept art, but it's my first head, so that's not going to happen, but I've been told this is pretty good looking for a first. XD I was so scared when I started and I have no more money so if I mess up I'm kind of out of luck. But, since I do seem to have a knack for rendering shapes in space well, I will make my fursuiting business focus on making something look spot on to Concept art that I am giving or of my own characters! 8) People may hire me for that. Also, I'm trying something I don't see on any other fursuit heads, pro or novice: A curved neck or an intentional arch to the neck for a stylized look to add to the head from the concept art. I like the arched neck look on animals so I'm trying to bring that to life here and it's working out WONDERFULLY! Very pretty and elegant!

My Goal for a FULLSUIT in the future

WOOO good job the duct tape saved the day there ^_^

Only thing I do recomend is at some point crafting a nose for your girl and get some follow me eyes with it. and possible if your brave I think the nose could use a little shave. But I love it I'm going to be making my first head soon as well nervous.

Wow, very nice, about mid way I was thinking you'd lost control of it and then you brought it back. Awesome!

Bushbabies have nostrils an they don't have craft noses, lol. I will shave the muzzle, I'm not afraid to do that. I just need to find an available shaver to use and that's not possible at this time and I has no monies, lol.

I don't know if follow me eyes are possible, unless I add more foam to the brow ridge and then add fur to it as well or just get some poly fill and fill some fur I glue down on the brow ridge. I was just going to do static eyes. For some reason I cannot get the eyes to look good with the rest of the suit and I don't know why. :(

Praise the Lord! I hope you do well on your first fursuit and even pray about it, that God help you make wise and witty decisions, cause he does that. He himself is a witty God and he is an artist himself! :)

SK- don't loose heart on your suit. The eyes are the window to the soul and also the part that protrays A LOT of your character- it took almost 2 months for my eyes to turn into something I could tolerate. (and I can still "see" areas for improvement, lol )

I went through a design crunch on my eyes, printed digital photos of my head gear and drew eyes on them, took pictures of myself with different emotions and used those pictures to craft what I have today. You have a leg up on me in the artistry department (my drawings look like stick figures... ) Pray about it too! It might seem like a little triffling thing to ask God for help on but he wants to hear from us, no matter how small (or important!) the issue.

Cheers!

I shall do that hon and that's a great idea to pray! Sometimes I get so aggravated I forget the simplest of things! :D Here's some portrait pictures and poses of the Tomedoe Head! She's no where near done yet, but I like the shape of the head so much its hard not to take pictures even though she's not done yet, lol!

The weird thing is, the suit has such a strange realism, that not even fantasy eyes are working for her and that's what I wanted it to linger in in the first place, but I also kinda wanted to just have my own eyes as her eyes, even though it's not what I plan to do with her ultimately in the future. That seems like a safe bet right now, but I'm going to try plastic Mesh eyes and if that won't work I'll just leave them as be. IT looks all right without any kind of recognizable eyes for some reason, but if I could try a KIND of eye, I was willing to explore and see if anything worked, lol.

She still needs her bangs, as in the concept art, but I don't know if that would look right, now that I realize I've made the mask in such a way something like that might clash, rather than make it look like my character.

You could find a wig that blends with that type of fur color and shape and cut it into the style you're looking for. ^w^ For my fursuit's eyes I used a combination of a plastic bowl (the white part of the eye and painted the iris) and plastic mesh for the pupil. This person has pretty good tutorials too. http://www.matrices.net/fursuiting.asp

Ah yes! Matrices! I was just there today, comparing notes and wondering if her method would work out for me. First I need to buy some plastic bowls. My problem is my eye sockets are so dang small, I think that might be why nothing is working :( BUt for now, they could stay orifices XD.

All you people out there who build your own fursuits with your own time and money' date=' you have my respect. This looks like it takes a lot of hard work and passion.

Thanks, and it's not an easy task. A lot of your ego getting punched, wrestled with, knocked down, tied up, taken for a ride, a lot of learning curves, ego boosts, happy times, sad times, OHHH SHOOOOT! Times, lol. It is fun, nonetheless and thanks for the respect. Even those who don't have the time or money, but love the art anyways and desire to do something serious with that love one day have my respect just as severely. 8)

I love those eyes by the way!

Thanks Sakiki! Hopefully' date=' once circumstances get equalized where I live, I can do something more serious with this since I have a knack for it. I might start taking commissions.[hr']

Turned out great! How'd you make the eyes anyway?

I made the eyes with plastic Mesh! Just drew the eye out on a piece of paper, cut it out, traced it onto the mesh and cut it out, then flipped it over facing the other way and cut it out again and there you have it, eyes. I painted the eyes after that with acrylic paint going off the eye that I originally drew on the paper for reference. Thanks very much. They must be really good cause I keep getting the "Wow! Great eyes!" Effect, lol. I just whipped them out and got them done in a flash, lol! The vision through them, despite there small size is all right for straight ahead. You just have to remember to look down and all about to make sure you don't snag a shin on something. I actually did that for the first time since I had made the head today. I felt dumb. I almost had a record of no injuries going, even though I knew the house I had been staying in for the past few months all ready. It CAN happen! XD
