Colabritive music

Something I've been thinking of recently, why can't we collaborate on some music together?

As in, the songwriters of the forums can write songs for us, then we have people who can sing or play an instrument add their parts to it, and I could mix it together and we'd have a finished song.

 

I've been trying to think of how to do this, and the easiest way I could come up with is if we could get a baseline vocal and some instrument, have each as a seperate track in Audacity and pass around the file it produces.

Each person would simply add and record a new track for what they want to contribute.

 

A note on Audacity: I know its horrid, but its free and runs on everything.

 

So, what would you guys think?

 

I have Foxbunny's song ready to do this, but I don't have permission to distribute and contribute to it.

I think it might be a little short...

 

But, ideas for songs are good too if you can think of any.

 

The bizarre fantasy in my head is to have some kind of Celtic rock song sung in Primal...

It would certainly be an interesting project. I am sure that there is a learning curve and the first attempt might not be the best, but if we stick to it, it'll only improve. I've heard that RUSH sometimes does that with some of their songs; and once they have it thrashed out, they all get together and do the recording in a studio.

 

I've been practikalin' on my geetar, but it ain't cooperatin' quite yet. We shall see; Might even send in the Yamaha for a tune-up.

I took a stab at Foxbunny's "Are You In?" and recorded some alternate vocals. I also have the project converted to Audacity, and I am uploading the project to my FTP site. We can stash stuff there if you want - Foxbunny, it's your baby, so you make the call. If you want to use it, I will create user names and passwords for all of the participants in the song project. We can "check in" and "check out" the project. I'm going to try and learn the guitar tabs, then see if we can overlay some harmonies.

I was experimenting with vocal harmonies this afternoon, and I'm pretty close to having the tabs down. Once I get the tabs up to speed, we can add a short instrumental between the verses, with some strumming in the background and some solo picking. You are right though, at 52 seconds, it's a shortie. We should probably try and get it in at 2:30 in length. Anything less feels like a jingle for a radio commercial.

Well, we can do this with the CF server. I was thinking somehting more public. We get the base tracks down, I post a download link, everyone that wants to contribute adds their part and returns the file, then I compile it together.

No, I mean, just put it in my dropbox and post a link to the base tracks on the forums here, then have people either email or dropbox the files back with their additions.

 

Also, Wolvy, could I have a track of just your vocals? I think the three of us together would sound interesting!

On second though, maybe not. My voice sounds horrid!

And, it would seem as though my mic sounds like a bandpass filter. I'll have to get a hold of an SM58 and dig up my board...

Hmm. I could do this. I'm pretty adept at making electronic music as it is. I have a full version of FL Studio Professional Edition and have been using it for a long time now. If I think that I could fit something in, I could definitely contribute.
