Computer Specs

Recommended Posts

Chances are that if you're reading this, you've got a computer.

So, what kind of computer do you use? Mac, PC, iphone... Tell us about it! Here's your chance to brag about what you have, or whine about what you wish your computer could do.

Updated: 02/01/2010

So, to start:

I use a couple of different computers, but I mainly alternate between my desktop and a laptop. On the desktop side, I've built a whirring monolith that is as follows:

Antec P182 Case (monolith)

Asus P5NE-SLI Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6Ghz, Overclocked to 3.16Ghz (whirring)

6Gigs of Ram, which it sees all of. :D

An NVidia 8800 GT drives my 1080P monitor and one 1280x1024, and an NVidia 9400 drives the other 1280x1024 and a 1024x768. Yes, I use all of them.

On the laptop side, I switch between my luggable Lenovo Y410, for the power work, and my Asus eeePC 1000h, for note-taking and casual surfing. The eee's specs are pretty standard:

1.6Ghz Intel Atom Processor

2Gb of RAM

80 GB Hard drive (Which I need to upgrade)

The battery, however, lasts a good 5 hours in use. Very nice for long classes.

The Lenovo:

Core 2 Duo Centrino @1.6Ghz

2 Gigs of Ram

320GB Hard drive

Integrated video. :(

Well, that's it. Now, show everyone what you use!

Gateway MT3421 laptop

Ubuntu Linux 9.04

AMD Turion 2.2 GHz 64-bit CPU

2GB RAM

Hard drive removed; using a 16GB SD card as the main drive

8X DVD-RW

SD Card slot

14.1" 1280x800 Display

NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100

3.5 hour battery life

5lbs

I've owned many laptops. This one is my favorite, thus far. Quite inexpensive, too. :) I removed the hard drive because I don't trust hard drives; I've had too many crash. I get better battery life without it. :P I run Ubuntu Linux on an SD card.

So I could tell you about the specs on my desktop, but such information would not tell you anything of true value.

What you need to know is this:

My desktop still works, though it has had amnesia multiple times.

My desktop hates me.

Now my laptop...

It's 12" by 9" clear plastic and not that heavy. The hard drive can hold a surprising amount of data, though I do have to transfer to my external hard drive every once in a while. Rainy days are particularly obnoxious for my data, though the case is water repellent. The processor is an old but time-tested model. The write speed is variable. Doesn't really connect to the internet, but does LAN fairly well. Battery life also varies, though it has gone for 18 hours or more at times. The OS is fairly reliable, though the data filing system is atrocious. Able to handle a wide variety of programs and some games, though primarily used for word processing.

I am such an English major... ^_^

(If you haven't figured it out, my laptop is a clipboard)

On one, unidentified brand computer i got from a garage sale at a moving business.

OS: Linux Mint 7

Hard drive: 10 GB

OS: Windows XP

Hard drive: 30 GB

RAM: 512

CPU: 800 MHz

Graphics Card: GeForce4 MX 420

I've got another computer i fixed up

IBM Aptiva M71

about 1 GB Hard drive

32 MB Ram

i forgot what the CPU was. 133 MHz probably.

It runs Puppy Linux a little sluggishly, and also FreeDOS

Oh, and i have a second computer from the garage sale much like the above, minus the linux hard drive i added.

And my laptop has nearly bit the dust...an IBM Thinkpad R52 with 512 MB RAM

I have a single core Pentium 4 at about 2.3g speed but I am really hoping to get my cel phone or a "tablet pc" (touch-sensitive screen designed to be portable) working for all my computer needs. They usually use those new Atom processors due to improved battery life. I am also looking at the possibility of using a server computer processor to do image manipulation and animation and just control that program with the cel phone or tablet PC. In that case, I might be able to boast a very powerful computer but not for the one in my hands taking my keyboard commands and image drawing tools.

Now, I have what I call the "POS Dell".

Form Factor: Laptop

Make/.Modle: Dell Latitude

Processor: 1GHz Pentium III Mobile

RAM: 256 (?) MB, I think its PC100 or 133. Old and slow either way.

HDD: 20GB ATA

Video: ATI Mobility Radion (16MB)

Monitor: 14.1" TFT

OS: CentOS 5.4 (same as CF's server actually) with Gnome.

Other: The lid hinges are shot, so the monitor is held up with a piece of tape when in use.

http://img69.imageshack.us/g/pic0195is.jpg/

It was acquired in a bit of an exchange. A lady with no money had it and a little netbook, both broken. The deal was, I'd fix one and keep the other as payment. I fixed both, called her and asked which one she wanted.

Memory: 3 gigs of DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB (can't remember the exact specs)

It also had 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth, Firewire, S-video out, ExpressCard/54 slot, 5-in-1 card reader, 2 headphone outputs, as well as a nifty little remote and earbuds. It also had a unique-for-it's-time glossy case with a cool little pattern embedded within the plastic. It was cool in 2008, but everyone does it now.

The defective NVIDIA chip eventually fried the entire mobo. :-/

Price in July 2008: $725 USD

New Laptop:

Model: Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5050

CPU: AMD Athlon II Dual Core P320 @ 2.1 GHz, 1MB L2 cache

Other features:

802.11b/g/n wireless, webcam, 4-in-1 card reader, eSATA/USB combo port, 10-key numeric keypad, and the ability to actually play HD video, even 1080p! (My old laptop sucked with HD.) Oh, and it has a special glossy case design of it's own.

I do miss the Bluetooth, XD-Card reader, remote, and the two headphone outputs. Otherwise, I love it!

Price in September 2010: $398 USD

That system seems very unbalanced to me as a systembuilder.. I probably would have cut down on the amount of RAM but spent that money getting a board capable of DDR3 RAM at least 1600 Mhz level maybe 1866, and probably put a 5670 in there depending on if it was going to be used for rendering/gaming/etc. Do you know how much they paid for the system?
