Need an External Hard Drive

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for an external hard drive that can work with pretty much anything, but that is durable and isn't too expensive (hopefully...)

I'm planning on using it for the Time Machine function for my iMac, as well as backing up files from my PS3.

So... looking for universal, cheap, and at least 500GB, but I want it to last a while since I don't actually have any income... just Christmas money. Thanks! :)

If you have a computer just laying around you could just pull the HDD out of it and get a SATA to USB cable. Its essentially the same thing(Just without a fancy casing), just slightly less convenient but if you wanna save money its worth a shot.

I got a SATA to USB HDD enclosure for like, $6 on newegg.com last year for my old laptop's HDD.

Hard drives are super expensive right now due to Taiwan flooding.

Oh, I didn't know that. :s

And here I was, planning on asking for another hard drive for Christmas. :-/

If you can hold off until May, hold off until May.

That's just how long it'll likely take for supply lines to level out to semi-normal levels.

Fr33 8ump, lul

Actually I found what appears to be a very nice hard drive, 500 GB on Newegg and wanted to run it past the computer savvy folks around here to see what y'all thought of it. Looks like a good price too, and sturdy enough to handle using Time Machine.

Only complaint would be that it's USB 2.0 only, but that is minimal I am sure.

Thoughts and comments?

I have the 2 TB version sitting on top of my NAS server. It works fine.

Seagate... I try to steer away from. Had a lot of them die. (I know, I have one, its been running for about a year now, just haven't been able to afford to step it up to a Western Digital, or even better, an array of Western Digitals.)

TimeMachine doesn't necessarily need a fast connection. I mean, you can back up over Wi-Fi and that's many times slower than USB 2.0.
