The Lone Wolf† 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2011 Don't think I'm rich... this computer came from 16 years of savings bonds that I got from my great grandmother >.> Lol' date=' not my nightmare to deal with [/quote'] I am repeatedly finding that the computer is awesome but the people around me who make various devices for computers are "newbs" That aside, after looking into programming and stuff, I decided I am going to want two computers of two OSs anyways. I will say though I did NOT download lion
Flechmen 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2011 Dude, go download Lion. If you're going to have a Mac, its still important to keep it up to date. Also, you can run Windows on it..
The Lone Wolf† 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2011 I heard a lot of nasty things about Lion though >.> And yeah I saw that you could run windows on it. And I dunno if this is normal for a mac but there is an extremely accessible terminal as well, and I immediately thought of you flech XD It's RAM is also upgradable manually as well which I thought was interesting. It seems this model they have gotten a lot more open. I definitely will want a laptop though, because with school and all I'll need to have constant online access. Flechmen 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2011 Yea, Paralells is very normal nowadays with Macs using X86 processors. Back when they used PPC processors, it was a lot harder. As for the terminal, yes, it has a terminal interface that's just like every other UNIX based operating system. That's pretty much the only thing I use on a Mac. The UI just makes me mad otherwise. Anyway, I've messed with Lion and its just some minor improvements over Snow Leopard, but there's added security and stuff supposedly.. As for RAM, the RAM has always been considered a user serviceable part. Meaning, you won't void your warranty upgrading it. When that cheap Seagate hard drive burns up tho, you're pretty SOL. With the build quality of these things, I cannot stress the importance of setting up Time Machine with a QUALITY Western Digital external drive. I took apart a late 2009 iMac recently and replaced the hard drive with a quality Western Digital. Hard drive was completely toasted. Man, that thing was a pain to take apart! The front glass is held on with magnets. So, I had to buy special tools to pull it off, then under it is a whole mess of torx screws. What got me kinda mad was they're just self tapping screws going into a plastic body. So cheapy! I wouldn't have expected anything less than fine threaded screws going into a brass insert. That's how my netbook is constructed, and its as bottom end as you can get with an X86 based machine. Anyway, the guy didn't set up Time Machine, all data lost. Anyway, he's running Lion, and it's been doing rather well for him. As for a laptop, you can fork out another 2k for a lower end Macbook or Acer has a laptop they're making right now for under $500 that blows it away. Its a quad core AMD Phenom 2 with I think an ATI Radeon HD 6450 graphics card with 1 GB of video memory and it comes with 4 GBs of DDR3, but really should have 8... DDR3 is cheap tho. Watch out when buying Mac memory. They've used some funky stuff in the past. My Powerbook uses a very specialized type of RAM that would cost something like $90 for 128 MBs of it. A PC of the same era, I could put a half gig of RAM in it for less than $20. Crucial is a big help in finding memory, and the memory they have is decent quality. I've used Crucial memory for a long time and recommended it to several people. The only computer I have that I upgraded the memory in that isn't Crucial memory is my desktop, but only because server DDR2 is freakishly expensive and I was trying to get it for as cheap as I could. Amazon and PNY memory ended up being a good match. Back on topic though, I see 2 TB Western Digital external drives go on sale for around $100. You can normally get something like a 1 TB for that price not on sale. LeCie does make nice things, but for a reasonable price range, I've never seen someone go wrong with Western Digital. I've killed many a Seagate and Hitachi drive with normal use... it took being pulled off of a table and hitting the floor so hard that the screen got ripped off of my netbook to cause damage to the WD drive inside of it. The drive still worked but once in a while it would freeze.

Guest Wolfin Report post Posted September 26, 2011 Mid-2011 iMac don't use self-tapping screws; as I now know But, yeah, I have a 27" iMac mid-2011 with a 2TB HDD & 16GB RAM (I got it with the minimum and got the upgrade kit from NCIX, it was $110 for 16GB of RAM, I was BLOWN AWAY). I use Parallels for a lot of common stuff, and keep my Windows 7 PC running beside it for gaming and to act as defacto file server for my other 13TB of storage. So, I eat some of my own words by using a Mac, but, with what I've seen of Windows 8, I don't feel bad Also, Lion works fine; nothing to be scared of there. /Robin

An mAudio box with the software that comes with it works great on a PC for less cash. Mid-2011 iMac don't use self-tapping screws; as I now know Its good to know that they've stepped up their build quality from that lower than a $200 netbook. For how much you pay for the thing' date=' I was very disappointed in the build. So, I eat some of my own words by using a Mac, but, with what I've seen of Windows 8, I don't feel bad If it helps you feel any better, I've still got my powerbook and I'm still looking for cheap RAM for it so I can run 10.5 on it.
