website domain

Recommended Posts

so i kind of want to make my own website, but with my own domain like "www.example.com". i found places where its like $10 a year. but in short i was wondering if anyone here has experience or knows of any other way that can be cheaper or free. but as a "www.example.com" website, not like "webs.example.com" or "www.example.net". i know i can just research this myself, but if theres someone who might know something important, knows which domain thing is the cheapest, which one gives you the better respect, more domain memory, or has any special tips or anything else, that would be helpful also. plus im still tired from reading google's adsense terms, agreements, etc etc. one thing i hate the most is reading.

To get a .com or .net or .org or .whatever it's going to be at least $10 a year. There's no way to get around that.

Now, that's just the domain. Domain does not mean hosting (which I'm guessing is what you mean by "domain memory"). You need another service for that. You can get OK hosting for cheap, or really good hosting for a small amount, like $5-$10 a month (or ask a certain fox very nicely).

For a domain, I would suggest going to Namecheap. CF here is hosted with a company called Flosoft, they've been very good to us, we've burned up some of their hardware.

As for domain "respect", I'm guessing you mean search engine rank. That depends totally on the content of your website. But, .com and .net and .whatever domains rank higher than website.something.somethingelse.

As for adsense, they'll deny your application if your website hasn't been up and running for a while with lots of content.

You can catch me on Skype or IRC or messenger and I can talk to ya a little more in depth.

Yea, you can get a yourname.co.cc or yourname.tk, but co.cc and .tk and the like are just about banned from just about everything.

Other than that, you're chasing after scams and spam.

thanks for the advice etc but i have another question. if you have a google site, then Manage your site, then click on Web Address, it says "This site can be displayed on a custom domain (e.g. www.example.com, wiki.example.com, support.example.com). You must own the domain and have access to change the CNAME records."

does that mean i can just pay for a domain, and use Google Sites like i would for web mapping. theres more information here

https://sites.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99448

i just want to make sure thats all. it seems like it though. becuz im not looking forward anything expensive (like web hosting), or anything professional (like my own web hosting with like 100 GB and stuff). or at least not yet.

Yes, you would have to buy your domain then use your register's DNS management to set it up so your domain points to Google Sites. The instructions for what records need to point to what addresses should be in the Google documentation.

Again, Namecheap's works pretty good.
