Penter† 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) After playing around with Anvil Studios and Synthfont I finally figured out how to write some songs. I figured I would post them here for some Critique/Advice for getting better. Oh, and don't expect too much from these. These are my first songs, so they aren't gonna be Fox Amoore-level good. https://www.dropbox.com/s/r90a7p7sk3y73hi/Eerie2.mp3?dl=0 This is my first song, and It's a bit shorter than the other ones. I didn't intend on it to be as eerie as it turned out to be... oh well. :/ I feel that the SoundFonts used here work, ( I'm sure I can find better, but I'm currently content. I don't know if changing anything will make the song better) https://www.dropbox.com/s/3lowr983hk1lnmq/Theme1.mp3?dl=0 This one didn't turn out how I wanted it to sound, but I do quite like the Guitar I found. The sound fonts at the beginning need changing, but I'm not sure what to use. I played around with some instruments I found, but none of them sounded quite right. This song is also incomplete. I will post an updated version when it is finished I may post a few more in the future here. Thank you for taking your time to listen to me! poleposition16† 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2014 The second one makes me think fondly of a game named Shenmue. Every artist has a start, glad to listen,
Penter† 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2014 Finished with My next song! ( I really need to start naming these, don't I?) I Originally was going to make this a slower, prettier piano song, but in the end, I liked how it turned out with Chrono Trigger Soundfonts. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0e6lraa3hyxqqwx/Piano1Chronotrigger.mp3?dl=
Rythe† 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) You certainly have some talent for it. As a bit of a warning, I know just enough about talking music to be dangerous. Mixing is more my bag, so I had to try really hard to ignore the quality of the sound fonts/instruments you were using.Eerie2 has a nice melody line. The bass line was more of a distraction, kinda like it was trying to play counterpoint, but it didn't quite work.Theme1 offended those mixing sensibilities most because the tones of the instruments you used stepped all over each other. It really made the soundscape seem cluttered, like you were trying to put too many notes into too confined a space. Got better as the song progressed with the stretches where there were fewer instruments playing, but even then, the instruments meshed well only rarely. Piano1ChronoTrigger has potential, mostly starting after you remove that 8-bit organ-y instrument completely. That instrument sounds terrible to begin with, but especially when juxtaposed against the higher quality instruments you were using otherwise. The organ line also highlights one of your big weakness that most young composers seem to struggle with - you haven't yet grasped how to use negative space well, that is, pauses and parts where certain or most or all instruments stop playing to emphasis something else. Sometimes it's about which frequency ranges you aren't using too, not necessarily all about what instruments you're using when, and the frequency footprint on that organ was the bigger piece of my problem with it, due in part to the volume being too high for it among all my other issues. But I digress. Negative space is really important in music in general, and the organ part just destroyed your negative space completely in this arrangement. Still, a good showing for your first songs! Keep it up. Edited September 27, 2014 by Rythe 1 Penter reacted to this
Penter† 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2015 I haven't been on a while. I apologize for not responding, but I do appreciate your input. I have gotten some better programs recently, and I opened up a soundcloud account. https://soundcloud.com/penterthecoffeedragon/hope-house-cover This isn't really my favorite style to work with, but I quite like how it turned out, at least compared to the other songs. Rythe† 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2015 The cover part was really, really good. The instruments complimented each other and it was pretty much everything I could have hoped for. My one suggestion would be to do more with the bass line, but that might make it less of a cover? Great choice of song to cover too. The first minute felt like you were demoing sound bites, and I'm not sure I should critique that part? It seemed like you were fiddling around and warming up rather than composing, or maybe you were trying to explore your way up to a theme. The first minute also had the unfortunate affect of reminding me of progressive style music, the kind that layers in instruments and things as time goes on and only gets good at the last quarter or so, which makes me annoyed that I only get a sliver of the good stuff and a lot of the incomplete "we're working on it" on stuff. But great job with the cover! ^^
