This is how the simple Hard Drive works in your computer.

How can one imagine this?

Isn't it amazing? The neat thing is that someone didn't just imagine it all at once. It started out as something simpler, like magnetic tape, and progressively evolved into something more complex through building on the design over time. It is really neat to see how far we've come already.

Hard drives have some darn strong magnets in 'em too...

Whats also interesting if flash memory if you ever want to look that up... It actually puts theories of quantum physics into practice :P
